PAL SOFTBALL RULES

These rules are modifications of ASA rules.  Familiarize yourself with them before working the league.

Umpire fee per game is $50.  Collect ½ fee from each team before the start of the contest.

 

Travel fee is $25.

 

No metal spikes are to be worn.

 

No jewelry – new earrings must be covered. This is contradictory, but…

 

There is a 2 hour time limit maximum from scheduled start of game.  If the umpire is late in arriving the time begins as he enters.  Double headers have a 90 minute time limit for each game.  There is no time limit in the playoffs.

 

Only starting players may re-enter.

 

This league uses an Extra Player.  It does not use the Flex/Defo.

 

A team can play with 8 players.  The vacant slot (#9) is an automatic out.

 

With 2 outs, a courtesy runner can be used for the pitcher and catcher.

 

Once a pitcher is removed from the mound, she can play anywhere but can not return to the mound as a pitcher in the same game.

 

The pitcher will start the motion with the pivot foot on or partially on the top surface of the pitcher’s plate.  The non pivot foot must be in contact with or behind the pitcher’s plate.  All other restrictions follow the ASA rules book.

 

The mercy rule for 10u is 12 runs after 4 innings or 3&1/2 innings if the home team is winning.

The mercy rule for 12u and 14u+ is 10 runs. The 12u divisions uses the 4 inning criteria.  All others use 5 innings or 4 &1/2 if the home team is winning.

There is no sudden death rule.  The home team must be given the chance to bat if they are behind.  Any team has the right to concede.
